Profhilo - is this injectable skin booster really all its cracked up to be??
This award winning injectable product produces impressive results - it’s said to lift, hydrate, smooth and plump the skin. But does it actually work? And how do you know if you are suitable? Let’s hear from Dr Adam Cheong, medical director of Tarporley cosmetic clinic, Skinphinity.
I’ve never heard of Profhilo, it must be new?
Profhilo has been around for several years now, but compared to many treatments it is still quite a newbie. But it has caused quite a stir and won the fabled “injectable product of the year” at the European Aesthetics Awards in 2018, quite an impressive achievement.
I personally introduced Profhilo into my cosmetic clinic in Tarporley in 2019 and found that it fit perfectly alongside dermal filler and Botox treatments.
What is it used for?
It is used for the face, neck and hands and is said to improve skin laxity, boosts 4 different types of collagen, and elastin, and it has one of the highest concentrations of hyaluronic acid of any product on the market. This helps to hydrate and firm the skin.
Rather than being a dermal filler to plump and lift one part of the face, this product works on the entire face to improve skin texture and complexion. This isn’t about changing the structure of your face, this is about hydrating the skin and give you radiance and glow.
So who is suitable for Profhilo?
Women over 30 often find that there skin may start to loose some of the firmness associated with youth, and especially after stress or illness there may be subtle signs of ageing creeping in. This is a great time to start, especially if you are not yet wanting dermal fillers.
However some people in their 20s also find that it just helps their skin feels more hydrated and radiant, even though they may not yet have lost the collagen firmness, and I certainly have several patients in this category who love it.
However women into their 40, 50s and beyond will all get benefit too, as our skin becomes more loose with more fine lines showing, Profhilo can benefit everyone. It works different to Botox which stops muscle movement, and differently to fillers which help to re-structure the face. Read more about these other treatments here
So in essence there is no age group that would not benefit.

I hear it can be used on my neck and hands- that sounds interesting!
Yes that’s right and these areas are often neglected in favour of the face. But the neck can actually show more signs of sun damage and loose ageing skin than anywhere else, often due to neglect in terms of sun protection! Common complaints I see in my Tarporley clinic are neck bands/horizontal grooves, fine lines and general laxity of the skin.
In fact the neck is often a give away for many celebrities who have perfectly smooth and youthful faces but have not treated their neck with quite such vigour.
Hands too can benefit, as the hydrating plumping qualities of hyaluronic acid lessen the appearance of sunken, skeletal sun damaged hands!
How is it injected and is it safe?
Profhilo is extremely safe in the right hands and with the right training. There are still risks if not injected at the correct depth, or not taking into account some anatomical features such as eye bags which it could worsen- but in the hands of trained experienced injectors this is an extremely safe product. Knowing who to trust can be hard in this un-regulated industry, but this guide may help -here.
There are 5 points injected on each side of the face, which leaves a firm bump, which gradually improves over the next few hours, often completely by the next day. Bruising is rare. It does sting a little but treatment time is very quick (around 5minutes).

How many injections do I need?
At my cosmetic clinic in Tarporley I ask people to return after 4 weeks for their 2nd treatment, and then if required a 3rd one can be done 3 months later. It can be repeated then 2-3 times per years as required.
