Do I need Botox or Fillers??

Many people misunderstand the difference between Botulinum Toxin commonly referred to as BOTOX® (which is actually the brand name) and Dermal Fillers and how each can help to enhance our natural beauty for different problems. In simple terms, Botulinum Toxin prevents muscle movement whereas filler replaces the body's natural hyaluronic acid which provides the skin its plumpness.

What does this mean?

Well, Botulinum Toxin is used to prevent wrinkles and lines that are caused by common facial expressions like smiling, frowning and raising the eyebrows. The Toxin limits these movement which stops the skin creasing hundreds or thousands of times per day. This allows the skin to heal and become smooth again. Depending on the depth of the lines this can be within a few weeks to several months.

Dermal Fillers are different. They have a thick consistency made up a gel like substance called hyaluronic acid. They are used to replace the sagging and diminishing fat, and shrinking bone, which happens to everyone with age. By supporting the tissues (think of it a bit like replacing the scaffolding) you can freshen up the ageing face. More on this in later blogs.

Fillers can also be used to enhance the natural features of the face such as cheeks, to give more contouring and definition, or the lips to create a fuller or more defined lip. They can replace lost tissue from under eyes , the so called Tear Trough, which also makes people look very tired. They can help support and lift a sagging jawline and jowl. Filler can be injected into the chin if it is recessed or weak to bring things back into a more attractive alignment. And more recently we have now started injecting into the nose to give a straighter profile, the “non surgical rhinoplasty “.

Fillers don’t need to look un-natural - and next time, I will explain how this is achieved.

Feel free to look at some of the results achieve with Botulinum Toxin or with dermal fillers all performed by me personally.
