Getting aesthetics treatments for the first time

A useful guide to aesthetic treatments for nervous first timers

It has been said that it can take up to 5 years from first researching cosmetic procedures to actually going ahead with it. Cosmetic procedures can be very daunting for the first timer, especially if you want to look natural and discrete. With a fad of huge lips and overdone cheeks it can be difficult to know whether it is right for you - I still get comments from patients concerned they will end up looking like a duck!

This unfortunately stems from just one extreme end of the market, which is the end which tends to get all the media attention. Young girls with huge overfilled pouts, frozen faces and “chipmunk cheeks”.

Well, there is another side to this industry. A more professional, ethical, clinical side to cosmetics. And in my aesthetics clinics in Tarporley and Hale where I perform Botox and dermal fillers, you can expect a service which is very different to that which is often portrayed in the media.

Firstly, training can be either a one day course followed by a certificate stating you are “competent” to go ahead and inject a potentially life changing filler.

Or it can be months and years of training in anatomy, physiology, dealing with emergencies, prescribing, years of consultation skills honed down to tee , meaning you are presented with a clinician who will give you an honest opinion of what may help you, after a thorough assessment taking into account your medical history, medications, and fully explaining any potential complications.

Both of these scenarios exist in the industry. But the latter scenario may be a more suitable option for those wanting a good product, injected at the right depth, the correct amount to give a natural looking , fresher appearance. Not a cheap product injected without much thought with no ability to deal with any rare but serious problems that could arise.

My goal when I see my patients is firstly to make them feel at ease as much as possible and giving an honest opinion - and yes, that means turning some people away. That’s right! It’s not uncommon for me to say no , and this is on the basis of my role as a doctor -to do no harm. If I don’t think a treatment will benefit someone physically and /or psychologically , then I won’t do it. Period.

Next time I will talk about what skills to look for in your practitioner. But for now, consultation is KING - call up and have a chat about options. It’s free. And i’ll be honest what we can achieve.

It will be me you see in person, every time at one of my clinics held across Cheshire.

Finally, have a look at my gallery and ask yourself, do any of these lovely patients I have treated look unnatural or overdone? Can you tell they have had work done, or do they just look a fresher version of themselves?
